PORTopera’s annual dinner/dance and auction has come to be known as the party of the year, and this year’s event promises to be the best ever. On Friday, June 4, we will celebrate 16 years of bringing grand opera to Maine with a very special event at the Marriott at Sable Oaks in South Portland. Titled "Into the (Enchanted) Woods," this gala fundraiser will support the company's July performances of Engelbert Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretel. The Marriott’s team of chefs has designed a delicious German menu. And, as has become tradition, Bob Charest’s quintessential dance band will play everyone’s favorites for dancing all evening.

Very special entertainment will be provided by mezzo soprano Heather Johnson, who has been tapped by Artistic and Stage Director Dona D. Vaughn to sing the role of Hansel in July. Heather, who sang with the company in 2001's "FigaroFest," has gone on to become a favorite at New York City Opera and has appeared at Glimmerglass, Opera Theatre of St. Louis, and many other companies. Heather's gala appearance is a gift to PORTopera.

This year’s auction includes some traditional and some exciting and unusual new items. A sampling:

A weekend at a Manhattan penthouse apartment and tickets
to the Met's Carmen, starring Maine's own Kate Aldrich.

Two "walk-on" roles for young people in the
mainstage production of Hansel and Gretel.

"Portland Entertains," a $1200 package of tickets and/or
membership passes provided by 11 Portland area visual
and performing arts organizations.

. . . and more!

For more information or invitations, phone (207) 879-7678.
Tickets are $125 per person ($1000 for a table of 8) and black tie is suggested.
