Maine's Divas Come Home

Maine's Divas

In celebration of PORTopera's 20th Anniversary Season

Three women with Maine roots who have achieved renown in the opera world will present arias and ensembles in a concert not likely to ever be seen again. The three, Kate Aldrich, Ashley Emerson and Suzanne Nance honed their highly-regarded artistic skills in Maine and now appear in the leading venues of opera around the world. What will certainly be a historic and long remembered concert is one of the major events celebrating PORTopera's 20th season.

Kate Aldrich, from the Damariscotta area, is a mezzo-soprano who has appeared on opera stages all over the U.S., Europe and Asia. She first appeared with PORTopera in 2005 singing the title role in Carmen, a role she has reprised at the Metropolitan Opera and around the world, also singing other major mezzo roles in the repertoire. Widely recognized for her strong acting ability and versatility, she was featured in the Zeffirelli film Aida, and she comes to us after recently starring as Leonor in La Favorite at Theatre du Capitole Toulouse.

Soprano Ashley Emerson came through PORTopera's Maine Emerging Artists program before being selected for the Lindemann Young Artist Development Program at the Metropolitan Opera.  Subsequently, she has appeared at the Met in over 100 performances and in many of the country's major opera houses.  She was called "a vocal and dramatic delight" by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch for her portrayal of the title role in the US premiere of Alice in Wonderland at Opera Theatre of St. Louis.  She sang in PORTopera's production of Lucia di Lammermoor in 2003 and returned to Maine for the title role in PORTopera's Daughter of the Regiment in 2011.

Suzanne Nance, soprano, is noted for her exceptional range, comedic timing and ability to captivate an audience, and she is widely recognized (and greatly missed!) in Maine for her success as host for the morning classical program on MPBN and for creating, producing and hosting the MPBN award-winning series "Maine Arts!" Her singing career includes appearances all across the U.S. and continues in 2015 with an international tour of Poulenc's one-woman opera La Voix Humaine. She is currently a host and producer on Chicago's WFMT.

Accompanying the ladies will be Martin Perry, a pianist well-known to Maine audiences, and critically acclaimed around the world as an artist well-versed in many genres.

The evening's program will include arias, ensembles, and a surprise or two from various operas by a diverse selection of composers. An unforgettable evening!
